Celebrations in Malaga

It’s true that here in Spain we like to get everyone together with some good food and joyously celebrate! Whether it’s an historic event or long held tradition, we see no reason not to celebrate and have fun and this is especially true for southern Spain and the province of Malaga, where there are a number of major parties and celebrations that take place throughout the year. So here at MAC Hotels we are going to let you in on the secrets, so that you can coordinate your next holiday in Benalmadena with one of these truly unique experiences.

Romería de San Juan

The Romeria de San Juan is a hugely important celebration in the province of Malaga and especially the towns of Arroyo de la Miel and Benalmadena where this famous pilgrimage takes place. This celebration in Malaga always occurs on the third Sunday of June, when the people of Benalmadena gather to begin the pilgrimage in the town of Arroyo de la Miel, which has San Juan as its patron Saint. The gathering, which is full of wagons pulled by farm animals and lavishly decorated with flowers and statues, ends in Benalmadena, where paella is handed out to those who have taken part and the celebration and dancing continue on into the balmy evening.

Fiesta del Carmen

With so much going on in Benalmadena this summer you will want to be close to the action so why not stay in the MAC Puerto Marina Hotel. This wonderful 4 star hotel provides the perfect place to stay in July during the celebration of the saint of sailors – La Virgen del Carmen. One of the most famous celebrations takes place in Rincon de la Victoria but it usually stretches along the coast to other towns with links to fishing, a provider of one of the main sources of income, like Benalmadena. La Virgen del Carmen is celebrated with seafaring processions, where sailors carry a flower adorned float, featuring the Virgin, on a ship into the sea, in order to bless the waters and help those struggling fisherman. There are also festivities on the beach, processions on land, abundant street parties and even firework displays to light up the warm evenings.

Zoco Árabe Benalmádena (Arabian Bazaar)

The Zoco Árabe Benalmádena takes place each year over a couple of days, towards the end of August or beginning of September in the town of Benalmadena and this year it will be celebrated for the 8th year running. The celebrations involve a large bazaar being set up through the main streets of the old town with lots of stalls offering a host of traditional Arab products, such as spices, clothes and sweets and foodies will love trying all the exotic dishes. Entertainment also comes in a similar theme with typical music and dance and a number of workshops offering you the chance to learn some eastern dances amongst other unique activities.

Fiesta de la Virgen de la Cruz

Each year in the town of Benalmadena not far from our MAC Puerto Marina Hotel, you will find another one of the major celebrations in this area. The Fiesta de la Virgen de la Cruz takes places in Los Nadales fair ground and is the perfect event for every type of visitor, thanks to an extensive programme of open-air concerts, featuring internationally recognised artists and including delicious food and much fun involved in choosing who’ll be crowned Queen of the fair.

As you can see there is never a bad time to visit and stay at our hotel in Benalmadena, but why not come and try something unique and get to know the local culture and customs by experiencing one of these unforgettable celebrations with MAC Hotels.
